What is the estimated processing time for each order?

For solid wood orders, the current processing time typically ranges from 4 to 9 weeks, and it may extend beyond this range based on the specific order requirements. This time frame is necessary to uphold our commitment to quality and to facilitate efficient coordination among various skilled craftsmen for proper finishing schedules.

What causes wood furniture to exhibit variations in its appearance?

All of our products and components are meticulously crafted by hand using solid wood. As a result, there may be slight variations in the specified dimensions. For instance, tabletops that are designated to be 48 inches in width may range from 49 inches to 47 inches. These variations can be attributed to changes in relative humidity, discrepancies in hand or manual cutting techniques, and the inherent natural variation of the material.

During drier months, the dimensions of our products may appear slightly smaller than specified. Conversely, in high humidity months, the measurements may reveal a slight increase in size.

The length of our products can also be influenced by the handcrafted and hand-cutting process, with potential variations of up to 1 inch.

Similarly, the height of our tables and items may differ by up to 1 inch from the specified dimensions, depending on the thickness or selection of the top or base. Additionally, the use of levellers can impact the height of items from the floor.

Furniture Care

How should I care for my furniture?

Proper maintenance of wood furniture is crucial to ensure its longevity and preserve its beauty. One of the key factors in maintaining wood furniture is controlling the humidity levels in your home. Ideally, the humidity should be kept at around 40% throughout the year.

During the summer months, when the air tends to be more humid, it is recommended to use air conditioners to regulate the humidity levels. Air conditioners not only cool the air but also remove excess moisture, helping to maintain the desired humidity level for your wood furniture.

On the other hand, during the winter months, when the air tends to be drier, it is advisable to use humidifiers to add moisture to the air. This helps prevent the wood from drying out and cracking due to the lack of humidity.

In addition to controlling humidity levels, it is important to protect wood furniture from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the wood to overheat and excessively dry out, leading to fading, cracking, and warping. Therefore, it is best to position your furniture away from windows or use curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight.

Furthermore, it is crucial to avoid placing wood furniture above or near heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, or heating vents. The heat can cause the wood to dry out and shrink, leading to cracks and damage. It is recommended to keep a safe distance between the furniture and heat sources to prevent any potential harm.

Conversely, it is also important to avoid exposing solid-wood furniture to excessively humid areas such as bathrooms. High humidity can cause the wood to absorb moisture, leading to swelling, warping, and mold growth. It is best to keep the furniture in areas with controlled humidity levels to prevent any damage.

If you have any concerns or uncertainties about the maintenance of your wood furniture, it is always advisable to seek professional advice. Our team is more than willing to assist you in ensuring that your solid-wood furniture can be passed down to future generations. We understand the value and sentimental attachment you may have to your furniture, and we are committed to helping you preserve its beauty and functionality.

How does movement affect drawers, doors, inset panels, and beds?

Solid wood is a natural material that is susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature. We ship our products to various regions in North America, where humidity and temperature levels can vary greatly. To mitigate the effects of these fluctuations, our furniture is stained and sealed to provide protection. Additionally, our wood is dried to a moisture content of approximately 7% before manufacturing.

During the winter months, our furniture is manufactured in a climate with a relative humidity of 20% - 45%. In the summer, the manufacturing environment has a relative humidity of 45% - 85%.

It is important to note that changes in heating, cooling, or different climates can impact the fit and finish of our products if the relative humidity differs from the conditions in which the furniture was built. Heating can cause the furniture to dry out and shrink, while humid weather can cause the wood to swell and expand. To address these issues, we recommend using humidifiers during cold, dry heating seasons and dehumidifiers in humid climates. This will help control the stress that seasonal changes can place on solid wood furniture.

We advise customers to maintain a relative humidity level of 45% - 50% throughout the year. This will create a stable environment for the furniture and minimize the risk of damage.

It is worth noting that wood typically expands and contracts more along its width rather than its length due to the structure of the wood grain. The extent of expansion and contraction can vary by 1/2" to 1" depending on the width of the material and the humidity levels during different seasons.

If visible changes occur in our furniture products, it may indicate extreme swings in relative humidity. To address this, it is recommended to use humidifiers or dehumidifiers as necessary. In dry conditions, unfinished lines may become exposed, requiring touch-ups after the product has acclimatized.

The solid wood back material, made from tongue and groove materials, will also expand and contract. All our products are finished after assembly. If the boards contract, white lines may become visible between them, necessitating stain touch-ups.

What is the relationship between expansion, contraction, and the nature of solid wood

What causes movement in tabletops?

Tabletop movement is a common occurrence in solid wood furniture, particularly in tables with and without leaves and breadboard ends. Solid top tables have a wood grain that runs the length of the table, while breadboard end grain runs across the table. It is important to note that solid top tables will naturally expand and contract in width, ranging from 1/2" up to 1", depending on the season or humidity level.

During the summer months, tables with higher humidity levels can expand wider than the breadboard ends by 1/2" to 1" in total width. Additionally, tables may bow down by as much as 1/2" to 1" in higher humidity. Conversely, in winter, the tabletop will shrink, resulting in a narrower width compared to the breadboard ends by 1/2" to 1" in total width. In winter months, tables may also curl up on the sides by up to 1/2" to 1". These fluctuations are normal for solid wood furniture tops.

It is important to note that tabletops, leaf pins, slides, and latches may experience stiffness due to humidity changes that occur after assembly and finishing. This is particularly true for Rough Sawn and Smooth Sanded Tables. The Rough Sawn texture typically helps hide or reduce the visibility of these natural differences. However, it is crucial to explain these characteristics to the end consumer before purchasing, as they are not considered Service & Warranty issues. Claims related to unevenness of tabletop surfaces and joints will not be considered warranty within these tolerances.

When placing solid wood furniture, caution should be exercised in concrete basements, outdoor storage areas, pools, and outdoor spaces. Our furniture is designed for use in stable home environments. Placing solid wood in unstable environments can stress the wood and coatings, potentially causing damage that is not covered under warranty.

Ever wondered about the story of Wormy Maple?

Wormy Maple is a popular choice for furniture makers and interior designers due to its unique and rustic appearance. The natural wormholes and mineral streaks give each piece of furniture a one-of-a-kind look that cannot be replicated. The wood's open grain and natural cracks and holes also add to its character and charm.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Wormy Maple is also a highly durable and long-lasting hardwood. How can table leaves be installed and stored?

Due to the artisanal nature of our products, it is imperative that all leaves are numbered and placed precisely in the designated slot or in the order in which the table was constructed. In the case of center leaf tables, our skilled craftsmen meticulously install the leaves and carry out the final sanding and blending using hand tools or sanders, paying close attention to the edge details. If the order of the leaves is mistakenly mixed up, it may result in a misalignment of the leaves. Therefore, it is essential to verify the numbering on the leaves to ensure they are arranged correctly and facing the appropriate direction.

For tables with breadboard ends, the leaves are specifically cut, shaped, and blended during installation. If a table leaf does not appear to lift up properly, it is important to confirm that the table number and leaf number are accurate. This information is typically handwritten on the breadboard, as well as on the top and bottom of the leaf.

What are some important safety precautions to consider when installing table leaves?

It is important to exercise caution when installing table leaves to avoid potential injuries. The gaps between leaves and tabletops can pinch hands and cause harm. Therefore, it is recommended to keep skin and fingers away from these gaps while closing the leaves. Additionally, the mechanisms used to secure the leaves can also grab clothing, skin, and hair. To prevent this, it is advised to avoid reaching under and behind the tabletop apron.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the slides used to extend the table can come very close to the aprons on the ends of the tops, which can result in severe pinching or crushing of fingers. Therefore, it is recommended to handle the table with care and avoid placing hands in these areas.

When laying table leaves directly onto table surfaces, it is important to be mindful of potential damage that can occur if the leaves are rested or dragged. Leaf pins, which are used to align the leaves, can leave deep dents or gouges if placed on the edge. To prevent this, it is recommended to always rest the smooth surface of the leaves onto the smooth surface of the table with fabric or towels in between.

Finally, it is important to never lift or carry a table with the leaves stored or installed. This can cause damage to the table and potentially result in injury. Therefore, it is recommended to remove the leaves before moving or lifting the table.
